Cowboy Up Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

Knight, Rob (editor). “Cowboy Up”, Torquere Press, 2008.

Homos on the Range

Amos Lassen

“Cowboy Up” is an anthology of gay cowboy stories that come from all over and span more than a century. These are some of the best ever written. The cowboys are big and bad, sexy, intelligent and stubborn. Above all they are rugged.
I liked every story in the book and of course I liked some more than others. It is interesting to see romance in these stories as well. There is a lot of hot sex to go with the romance as well as a good deal of emotion.
If I had to pick a favorite and that is hard I would have to say it is “Stormclouds” about not staying angry with a lover and Dallas Coleman has written some wonderful prose. Jordan Lane’s “Surrender” is an excellent story about hot and sexy cowboys who share conflicts.
If I had to pick one word to describe the anthology I would have to say “subtle”. There is love that is not spoken of and I love the differing views of the relationships between the men. Now that gay cowboys are in vogue, you just might want to read this.

Cowboy Up Overview

Ride ’em cowboy! That’s what you’ll be shouting once you’ve read the Cowboy Up anthology. Editor Rob Knight has gathered a great selection of stories from authors like Sean Michael, BA Tortuga and Parhelion, featuring cowboys from around the globe and across more than a hundred years. These stories all illustrate the best and worst of the breed. Stubborn, independent, and sexy as all get out, the cowboys of Cowboy Up will leave you smiling, sometimes crying, but always admiring the tough, rugged man that rides the range and keeps his bedroll warm at night. Get yourself a cowboy today!

Come Back to Me Review

Come Back to Me Overview

Author Angie Cantinnini’s agent convinces her she must use a pseudonym if she hopes to land a contract with a mainstream publishing company-especially since the protagonist of Angie’s novels is a hard-boiled male detective. Neither Angie nor her agent anticipate the raging success of the series of books or the mountain of wealth that accompanies each new release. As a best-selling author, Angie should be delighted with her Bohemian life in Key West, but happiness is elusive because it’s her alter-ego, Zach England, who’s receiving the accolades, while Angie is relegated to anonymity. Meryl McClain, the recently hired book review editor at the prestigious New York Banner, wants to make a strong first impression with her readers, so she picks Zach England’s latest novel for her debut column. She offers a scathing critique, unaware the real author behind the pseudonym is her long-lost true love, Angie. Heartrending choices separated the lovers eleven years earlier. Seeing Meryl’s review overwhelms Angie with feelings she thought she’d laid to rest years ago. This stroke of fate beckons them to reunite, but Angie’s secret identity and Meryl’s struggle with a childhood trauma conspire to keep them apart. Torn from a shared moment in their past, the words Come Back to Me have haunted the two women for more than a decade. Is it too late for Angie and Meryl to choose love again?

After Sunset Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

Amanda Young is one of my favorite M/M authors, she actually writes like a gay man who’s part of the scene (and that’s meant as a compliment). She knows the gay scene well, from park beats to glory holes. This one begins as a guy cruising a park who is seduced into sex with a stranger. However, it turns out to be his lover and they get their rocks off indulging in dangerous liaisons.

When a third guy enters the equation they both think the other has organised the threesome. This is slut erotica at its best.

After Sunset Overview

A Naughty Nibbles Story…

When Toby’s plan to satisfy his exhibitionist streak goes awry, he isn’t sure whether to roll with the flow or run away. However, staying and becoming the focal point of not one, but two men’s desire certainly has its rewards.

Possessing Morgan Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

Detective Sergeant Morgan Riley O’Callaghan of New York City’s Fifth Precinct, Homicide Division, comes across as aloof, arrogant and abrasive but is kept in relentless but caring check by her partner. Several of her colleagues known as the Three Musketeers are a piece of work, to be disliked immediately and throughout the book – they have no redeeming qualities.

In walks the new Assistant District Attorney, Andrea Worthington, a southern belle socialite from South Carolina and it is an explosive first meeting between her and Morgan. You know there will be a romance down the line but have to wonder how it will ever come about based on that meeting. It does happen with a great amount of patience, gentleness and understanding.

A murder takes place and looks like an open and shut case but really starts the twists and turns in this first rate mystery novel. Possessing Morgan is full of action and suspense. It is a solid book, well written, imaginative and intriguing with an excellent thoughtout plot and powerful characters. This book holds your attention from beginning to end with fast paced drama. This author’s first publication is a winner – don’t lend out your copy, keep it on your shelf and make your friends buy their own. Without a doubt FIVE Stars….

Possessing Morgan Overview

New York City, in the height of summer. Crime seems to have taken a holiday, and Detective Morgan O’Callaghan is bored, bored, bored. Paperwork is mating and multiplying on her desk, and even a jaywalker is starting to look good. Anything to get her out from behind her desk! Enter Andrea Worthington, Charleston socialite and all-around rich girl, right down to the wealthy fiancé. She’s also the new Assistant District Attorney assigned to Morgan’s precinct. Their first meeting is like two freight trains crashing head on. Then a high profile, career make-or-break murder case throws them together again. The investigation has barely begun when Andrea becomes the target of a nearly fatal hit-and-run. But was it really aimed at her? Can she and Morgan find the common ground they need to solve the case and stop the attacks, or are the gaps just too wide to bridge?

How Big Is Your Faith Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

I’m probably one of the least religious people on the planet. Thus the title was a signal that a certain preachy tome was ahead, however its plot – gay son of a prominent Baptist preacher comes home from college for Thanksgiving and all sorts of drama unfold – made me forge ahead, intrigued, despite the fact that I abhor “preachy” anything and church folk in general.

However, Darvin Lewis quickly drew me into the life of Robbie Myles, Jr., his friends and family and his loves so deeply that when the inevitable preaching began I was too hooked to be overly annoyed by it. I do have to put this in the class of ‘Gospel Lit.’ because of the heavy-handed sermonizing and themes of redemption (via Jesus) throughout, but these too were well overcome by the author’s skillful prose and character development.

This book could be useful to deeply religious people dealing with the gay issue, though I’m not satisfied they come to the proper conclusion – as I’m not entirely sure if the pastor in the story came to the right one himself. Some loose ends and questionable outcomes are not a bad thing though, because sometimes our own personal reflections on an issue are what really matters in the end. All in all, this is a most skillful and thought provoking read. I highly recommend it, and eagerly look forward to the next project from this author. ~ Taylor Siluwé, author of Dancing With The Devil & Cheesy Porn…and other fairytales

How Big Is Your Faith Overview

Robbie discovers that his sister is dating an infamous drug dealer, Six, who has also taken his little brother James under his wings, showing him the ropes of the drug trade. As if this isn’t enough, Robbie finds himself entangled in a heated relationship with a male pastor from his father’s church, as Robbie struggles with his own sexuality and comes to grips with living his life on the down low. Sex, lies, and scandal abounds as this family hopes and prays they have enough courage and faith to make it through these trying times.

Wanting Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 8/10

PROS:
- Rhodes does a good job of delving into characters’ heads and really examining how they’re thinking and why they feel the way they do.
- I always find this author’s sex scenes really hot–mostly because she tends to create characters who have been secretly pining for each other for years, so when they finally get together, it’s emotional and explosive.
- I really like Al, Ben and Jeremy’s roommate. He’s blunt, accepting, and disarmingly charming.

CONS:
- It caught me by surprise when Jeremy finally confessed that he wanted Ben for as long as Ben would have him. The reason, I think, was that I had seen proof of Jeremy’s soul-searching about his sexuality and his attraction to Ben in particular, but I hadn’t seen Jeremy admit, even to himself, that he really wanted something long-term.
- There are some cliché remarks throughout the story about being true to yourself, family not having to be born into, etc.

Overall comments: This is a simple story about someone who’s closeted working up the courage to admit his feelings for his best friend. It’s not complicated or terribly original, but I liked the characters and thought that it was definitely worth a read.

Wanting Overview

It started with one kiss. Which led to another. And another. And then to a mind-blowing night of intimacy Jeremy Reynolds can-t forget. He can-t stop thinking about the gorgeous, smart, compassionate man who tilted his world. Can-t stop seeing warm, sexy eyes gazing at him with breath-stealing intensity.

Jeremy tries to tell himself to let the incident go, move on, and chalk it up to a life experience. After all, what transpired between him and his best friend and roommate, Ben Cross, can never happen again. Ben is gay, and Jeremy…isn-t. At least he-s never thought he was before. But now he-s torn and confused and not sure what the night with Ben meant-for either of them. Already stressed about final exams before the holidays and his difficult family situation, Jeremy doesn-t know how to deal with the conflicting feelings he-s having. And the one person he-s always been able to talk to about everything, and who-s always been there for him, is the very person he-s been avoiding for the past week because he doesn-t know how to face him after waking up in his bed.

Afraid he might have already screwed up his and Ben-s friendship beyond repair, Jeremy is haunted even more by the backlash he could face if he admits to Ben, or even to himself, how much the night they spent together really meant to him.

And how much he still wants Ben even now…

Telling Memories Among Southern Women: Domestic Workers and Their Employers in the Segregated South Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

While reading The Help I found myself wondering what Kathryn Stockett was using as a foundation. Yes, she’d lived in Jackson, MS (I spent my first two years of undergrad in Jackson ‘65-’67) and yes, The Help was fiction…but what else was there? I was thrilled to read in the acknowledgments “Thank you to Susan Tucker, author of the book Telling Memories Among Southern Women, whose beautiful oral accounts of domestics and white employers took me back to a time and place that is long gone”. I immediately went in search of this book. I can tell you it was next to impossible to find the the copies available were priced reflecting the supply and demand, I think the cheapest one I could find was around . Fortunately I was able to find a hard-backed copy through my local library, which I devoured. I’ve now ordered my own copy since evidently more have been published and prices are reasonable.

Telling Memories Among Southern Women: Domestic Workers and Their Employers in the Segregated South is a collection of interviews done by Susan Tucker, a white archivist and librarian and Mary Yelling, an African-American social worker. They are arranged by topics such as “Giving and Receiving.” Each topic is introduced in the context of the times and we read interviews from both the domestics and employers. Each interview has an introduction that sets the context for reading the interview. It gives us an historical, qualitative research-based look at these times in the south. While reading what was said by the women who lived different sides of this social institution we get a glimpse of a former time. If you read and enjoyed The Help but would like more, you’ll love this book.

Telling Memories Among Southern Women: Domestic Workers and Their Employers in the Segregated South Overview

In Telling Memories Among Southern Women, Susan Tucker presents a revealing collection of oral-history narratives that explore the complex, sometimes enigmatic bond between black female domestic workers and their white employers from the turn of the twentieth century to the civil rights revolution of the 1960’s. Based on interviews with forty-two women of both races from the Deep South, these narratives express the full range of human emotions and successfully convey the ties that united-and the tensions and conflicts that separated-these two mutually dependent groups of women.

Check Out Finding Zach for $15.27

Finding Zach Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

Finding Zach is for sure one of these novels that use angst to involve people in the story, but I have to say that it has also its moment of tenderness and sweetness: in the end, the romance part is so strong that outbalance the sadness.

At 15 years old Zach was in love with David, 18 years old and his best friend since they were kids. David’s parents worked for Zach’s ones, and so they were always together, David posing as guardian angel for the younger boy; and so, when teen Zach impulsively declared his love for David, everyone, from his parents, to David himself, thought he was too young and that he needs to grew and experience the world. They sent him for a summer vacation in Costa Rica and Zach was kidnapped and taken captive for 5 years, treated like a dog, leashed, collared and caged, and continuously raped by his captor. When he is rescued at 20 years old, he is broken and unable to return to his previous life, and so, when David asks to see him, Zach refuses, but not since he doesn’t love David, but since he fears to taint the memories he had of the young boy; the 20 years old Zach is no more the friendly and careless boy who was able to charm and overwhelm David, he is now bitter and scared of everything, and above all he is angry with the world.

On the other side, David has a sense of guilty big as an house; when Zach was kidnapped, David realized that he was in love with the boy, but as they both say after, probably if they were given the chance to live that teen love, they would have overgrown it. Instead their love was interrupted, and David felt as he had no closure; any relationship he had after that was a failure, since he was not able to forget the protectiveness he felt for Zach. When Zach comes back to them, he doesn’t need David, he is no more the young boy with the world in front of him and above all he seems to don’t consider David as his reference point. If David wants to go back in Zach’s life, he has to accept that the balance among them is changed: it’s not easy since David has always played the role of the lead in his relationship, and instead Zach now needs to be in control, to always have the freedom to come and go, and above all, to not feel constriction. Even in bed, David will have to give up the top position to Zach; they are lucky since, even if traumatized, or maybe right for that, Zach is a very careful bed partner, but in no way he can be the bottom.

A little warning to the reader: don’t feel discouraged from the first pages; at first the story is quite heavy angst, oppressive and apparently dark and without hope. This feeling will dissipate soon, and as I said, on the average there is more sweetness than angst; the relationship between Zach and David start almost as soon as they meet again, and even if it will be not an easy ride, it will be something they will do together.

Finding Zach Overview

For five years, Zach Tyler, son of one of the world’s richest software moguls, was held hostage, tortured, and abused. When he is rescued at last from the Venezuelan jungle, he is physically and psychologically shattered, but he slowly begins to rebuild the life he should have had before an innocent kiss sent him into hell.

His childhood best friend David has lived those years with overwhelming guilt and grief. Every relationship David has tried has fallen apart because of his feelings for a boy he thought dead. When Zach is rescued, David is overjoyed—and then crushed when Zach shuts him out.

Two years later, David returns home, and he and Zach must come to terms with the rift between them, what they feel for each other, and what their future could hold. But Zach has secrets, and one of them might well destroy their fragile love.

Passion Review

Hot!!!

Special Price Here

This is a spin off story from a previous book by the same author, The Elf and the Shoemaker. Robert is the customer who bough the little bottle of passion oil in Logan’s shop, but Passion is not a fantasy tale like the other one.

Robert is a forty years old successful business man who starts to realize that he has nothing of really serious in his life. Truth, he has his multi-millionaire business, a beautiful home and a sporty car, but he is alone. He has even tried to make a move on Logan, but we read in the previous book that the man just started his relationship with the elf, and so he brushed off Robert, even if in a gentle way. Actually I was quite sad for Robert since he was a really sweet guy. One of the most interesting scene in the book, is reading the same scene again, this time from Robert’s point of view. Robert bought also one of the magic bottle of Passion oil, and after using a bit of it on himself, he goes to his usual friday pub, and as always he is pining after Jesse, the handsome bartender. Jesse has never left Robert believe that he could be interested, and actually Robert thinks the man to be straight. But this night the weather helps him and conjures to make them spend more time together.

Robert confirms to be a sweet guy, not at all the cold businessman; there is no actually any drama in his past life if not unfortunately the usual rejection from a too strict family, but probably Robert spent too time building his firm and not enough caring for his personal life. Now he is in that moment of his life when, if he doesn’t do something really soon, he could end with a lonely, even if comfortable, old age… and he doesn’t want that. But Robert is not desperate, he is not willing to pick up the first man only to fill a void in his life.

On the other hand Jesse is recovering from a tragic past and from a sense of guilty that is eating him alive. But he has eyes, and he saw Robert from the first time he entered the pub; and now months after maybe his sense of guilty is a little dumped down, and he is ready to let the man nearer than before. But Jesse, even if obviously the stronger in body, and probably the leading man in the relationship, is also skittish like a wild horse, and maybe Robert, with his quite aplomb and his serene behavior is the right man to approach him.

I like the story, even if it’s not so long, neither in page or time: it spans only some hours in Robert and Jesse’s life, but they are intense hours, and overall, it’s a real romantic story.

Passion Overview

As the owner and CEO of his own company, Robert Bauer has spent the past fifteen years building his business into a multi-million-dollar corporation. It’s taken all his time and energy, which hasn’t left much room for a personal life, especially a love life. That’s fine with Robert because he doesn’t believe in the “L word” anyway. Lately, however, every time he goes to his favorite bar, he can’t keep his eyes and thoughts off Jesse McIntyre, the gorgeous bartender with the soulful blue eyes. Even though Robert’s not looking for a relationship, and tries to shake the attraction, he can’t get the younger man out of his system. There’s just one problem…he believes Jesse’s straight.

Jesse’s been on the run from his old life for the past two and a half years. Even though he slings drinks at a gay bar, he has a hard and fast rule about never hooking up with customers. He’s been down that road before, and though his physical wounds have healed, the emotional ones aren’t so easy to forget. He lets his customers assume he’s straight because it makes it easier to keep his distance. That is, until the businessman with the sexy smile starts coming into the bar. Jesse’s drawn to Robert, even though he knows there’s no way a wealthy, powerful man like that would ever be interested in a tattooed, college drop-out bad boy like him. But even if Robert weren’t his opposite, it wouldn-t matter anyway, because Jesse’s determined not to break his rules for anyone.

When fate throws them together, and they find themselves alone for a weekend, the passion that has silently simmered for months ignites a firestorm that leaves them both shaken. Will it be enough, though, to convince Robert, who’s sworn to never fall in love, that he might be pushing away the best thing that’s ever happened to him? Or to force Jesse to face his fears once and for all and learn to trust his heart?
